Ishmael describes him as crazy and evil personified. At one point in the novel, he meets another whaling captain who also lost a limb to the whale Moby-Dick. Why is vetinari a woman? How does SCP kill? Ahab devotes himself to finding Moby Dick and exacting revenge for his lost arm.
Ahab sees that inscrutable power as evil. Some scholars argue that it is not the whale, or the force behind the whale, that is evil; the evil is in Ahab. Others see the captain as simply insane. The main character in Moby Dick chased the white whale Moby Dick for a realllly long time and never caught him.
Ahab symbolizes the single-minded, obsessive quest to achieve one goal. Ahab, with his scar and missing leg filled in by a whale bone, is willing to go literally to any length for revenge against Moby Dick. Even if the whale kills him, Ahab will choose his own doom.
Thus, Ahab represents mankind in rebellion against Nature, fate, or God. The white whale does not die in Moby Dick. Ahab receives a prophecy from a crew member informing him of his future death, which he ignores. Moby Dick is spotted and, over the course of three days, engages violently with Ahab and the Pequod until the whale destroys the ship, killing everyone except Ishmael. Illustrations from Moby-Dick, published in and authored by Herman Melville. Ishmael encounters the ship after he arrives in Nantucket and learns of three ships that are about to leave on three-year cruises.
I, Ishmael, was one of that crew; my shouts had gone up with the rest; my oath had been welded with theirs; and stronger I shouted, and more did I hammer and clinch my oath, because of the dread in my soul.
With greedy ears I learned the history of that murderous monster against whom I and all the others had taken our oaths of violence and revenge. Thus, revenge divides Ishmael from the reader. From this point forward, the narrator will seem less and less like Ishmael and more and more like Melville.
Such a crew, so officered, seemed specially picked and packed by some infernal fatality to help him to his monomaniac revenge. Note the word "monomaniac" here. As I sat there at my ease, cross-legged on the deck; after the bitter exertion at the windlass; under a blue tranquil sky; the ship under indolent sail, and gliding so serenely along; as I bathed my hands among those soft, gentle globules of infiltrated tissues, woven almost within the hour; as they richly broke to my fingers, and discharged all their opulence, like fully ripe grapes their wine; as I snuffed up that uncontaminated aroma, — literally and truly, like the smell of spring violets; I declare to you, that for the time I lived as in a musky meadow; I forgot all about our horrible oath; in that inexpressible sperm, I washed my hands and my heart of it; I almost began to credit the old Paracelsan superstition that sperm is of rare virtue in allaying the heat of anger: while bathing in that bath, I felt divinely free from all ill-will, or petulance, or malice, of any sort whatsoever.
Would he be able to relax then, or what? Fashioned at last into an arrowy shape, and welded by Perth to the shank, the steel soon pointed the end of the iron; and as the blacksmith was about giving the barbs their final heat, prior to tempering them, he cried to Ahab to place the water-cask near.
Ahoy, there! Tashtego, Queequeg, Daggoo! What say ye, pagans! Will ye give me as much blood as will cover this barb? A cluster of dark nods replied, Yes. Forging a harpoon in human blood in a demonic parody of the baptismal ceremony, Ahab proclaims in fancy pseudo-church Latin, "I baptize you, not in the name of the Father, but in the name of the Devil!
It might seem weird that he wants to use human blood to create the harpoon that will strike Moby Dick, but, if you think about it, any tool used for hunting the White Whale seems to get covered in human blood sooner or later! Oh, now I feel my topmost greatness lies in my topmost grief. Ho, ho! Why is Ahab tell Starbuck just before his whaleboat is lowered into the water? What happens to Ahab at the end of the novel? He has gray hair, a scorched face, and a giant scar running down his face and torso.
