It ends when Kal-El, or Superman as other folks have taken to calling him, kills General Zod when defending a random human family in a Metropolis train station. Superman snaps his neck, and feels intense sadness about the choice he made.
Superman: Dawn of Justice , and coming back to life in Justice League , with an invisible mustache. Well, there's a handful of scenarios that would see Superman not killing Zod, one of which would be Kal-El siding with Zod before there was ever a fight, letting the World Engine terraform Earth.
Which, naturally, in compliance with the Hall of Villains bylaws and universal comic logic, would have dictated that General Zod break out of confinement. So say that General Zod is still alive, and Michael Shannon has somehow made up his mind on spending some more time in his muscle suit, terrorizing the DCEU. Well, that would have had a huge implication for Batman v.
Rather than resurrecting Zod to become the bastard creation that is Doomsday, we probably would have seen Zod again. Metropolis would have been even more destroyed in Batman v. Superman , leaving humanity even more softened up for either Darkseid or Steppenwolf to subjugate Earth with the greatest of ease. Not to mention, if Batman v. Thanks to the changes of the DCEU's trajectory though, this never came to be. That's where the joy and glee comes from, and that sense of warmth from the character, which is his real superpower — he makes people believe in themselves.
It was a shame because it would've been nice, and it would have been a lovely coupling with the seriousness and the depth of Man of Steel. This isn't Cavill taking a jab at the direction the DC universe has gone, but rather him just noting what could've been. Since audiences will never see this original storyline play out, there's no telling whether or not the arc would've felt natural or worked in Man of Steel 2. As Cavill continues on as Superman, though, it will be interesting to see whether or not future films attempt to tie this vision in.
The resurrected Superman in Justice League may just have a new outlook and personality from the start, thus neglecting the possible thematic elements Snyder had in mind. Either way, Cavill's future Superman appearances should have more of the joy he's mentioning - just probably not because of Snyder's arc being fulfilled. And whether or not those appearances come in Man of Steel 2 remain to be seen.
Lex has no fear of Superman which is equally as scary as a villain who shouts in one's face. General Zod's plight provides an interesting view of a villain: he's trying to save Krypton's remnants and stop a traitor of his civilization from siding with an unknown race of people that are hateful and chaotic in his eyes. To him, Superman is going against his own people in a traitor-like fashion. Though fans know this is simply not the case since Zod wants to rule with an iron fist, it is interesting to see things from a different perspective than our own.
To Zod and his loyalists, he is the hero of Krypton which was portrayed rather well on SyFy's Krypton. While Zod definitely belongs in the Phantom Zone's hall of fame for his stories, there is no denying that Lex Luthor is without a doubt the most famous of Superman's villains, even beating out characters like Darkseid. There are even debates on if Lex Luthor is more famous than Batman's Joker.
So it's an understandable argument from fans who consider this a reason why Lex Luthor is the superior villain. Lex Luthor has been a recurring threat since since his debut in Action Comics more times than most villains.
In a more tragic side of the character, General Zod is someone who could easily help Kal-El in creating an intergalactic bridge between two races in peace and harmony. Zod could provide Kryptonian technology and help advance humanity to expand to the stars. Not only that, but both Superman and Zod also share the same loss of their people: instead of being enemies, they should be working together to help preserve what's left of their endangered race but instead, Zod chooses to be the tyrant and conquered which makes the relationship between him and Superman more tragic.
