What Is Confidence? Believing in Yourself Has someone told you that you're smart? Here are a few tips to try: Build a confident mindset. When your inner voice says "I can't," retrain it to say "I can. It's natural to compare ourselves with other people. It's a way to understand ourselves and develop the qualities we admire. But if comparisons often leave you feeling bad about yourself, it's a sign to work on your confidence and self-esteem.

Shake off self-doubt. When we doubt our abilities, we feel inferior, unworthy, or unprepared. That can make us avoid people and situations we might enjoy and grow from. Take a safe risk. Sign up for a school committee, volunteer to help with a project or bake sale, or try out for a team or talent show.

Raise your hand in class more often. Talk to that cute kid in your science class. Challenge yourself to do something that's just beyond your normal comfort zone. Pick something you'd like to do if only you had more confidence.

Give yourself a little push and do it. You may feel inferior, unloved, or be sensitive to criticism. Feeling confident in yourself might depend on the situation. For instance, you can feel very confident in some areas, such as academics, but lack confidence in others, like relationships. Having high or low self-confidence is rarely related to your actual abilities, and mostly based on your perceptions. Perceptions are the way your think about yourself and these thoughts can be flawed.

Low self-confidence might stem from different experiences, such as growing up in an unsupportive and critical environment, being separated from your friends or family for the first time, judging yourself too harshly, or being afraid of failure.

People with low self-confidence often have errors in their thinking. Individual counseling can also help increase your self-confidence if you need more help. It is quite often that some of the clients come with the self-doubt, hesitation and confusion on what to do next.

How could coach work with the client to shift from the state of self-doubt to self-confidence? This awareness cannot be taken for granted. Acknowledging that I am doubting myself on my own capabilities in some areas requires courage and authenticity, especially for a person who is proud of being confident, who usually equates self-doubt with vulnerability.

The coach then needs to work together with the client on the underlying beliefs leading to the current state of self-doubt, identify the past events leading to these underlying normally limiting beliefs.

It is important for the coach to notice this shift of the speaking pattern and make the client aware of this difference. It also represents a shift from the state of self-doubt towards the state of self-confidence.

Both self-confidence and self-doubt come from the past. Finally, it is important for the client to acknowledge the shift from self-doubt to self-confident.

All of us at some period of our life is vulnerable, with self-doubt clouding our head. However, knowing explicitly that one has the experience and confidence to deal with this inhibit feeling in a positive way will help the client identify the state self-doubt more easily in the future and take self-corrective action accordingly.
